Air Vent
Slot cut in face frame, toe kick, etc, to allow for ventilation of appliance, heating register, etc. |
A-La-Carte
Distressing option in which the Client may choose which distressing techniques that they would like used. |
Appearance Board
Wood onlay matching the door used to cover extended stiles, wide stiles, etc. |
Appliance Panel
Panels produced to be attached to the face of the clients appliances to give a built-in, furniture appearance. |
Apron
A 1/2" thick x 8" high piece of the same material and finish as the cabinet interior used to conceal plumbling, etc. |
Baluster
Any of the small posts that support the upper rail of a railing, as on a staircase. |
Base Mixer Shelf
Shelf that swings up and out for use, then locks in place. |
Beaded Inset
Inset cabinetry receiving a bead on the interior face frame edge. |
Blum Hinge
Fully concealed, 110 degree, self-closing hinge in nickel finish. |
Bread Box
Modification in which a sliding plexi-glass lid is added to the top of a larger drawer box to allow for bread storage. |
Butt Doors
Used to describe the omission of the center stile of the cabinet, thus allowing the doors to butt together while providing full access to the cabinet interior. |
Chamfer
A beveled edge or corner. |
Clear Interior
Used exclusively for the WoodBridge series cabinetry. The standard maple interior will be finished clear. |
Clip
A 45 degree cut on the corner of the cabinet. Standard sizes include 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3, and 6 x 6. |
Cobblestone
A light, subtle form of physical distressing. |
Concave
Term used to describe cabinetry or moulding that curves inward. |
Convex
Term used to describe cabinetry or moulding that curves outward. |
Corbel
A wood bracket used for support. |
Distressing
Giving the appearance of being antique. |
Dove-Tail
A projecting, wedge-shaped part that fits into a corresponding cut-out space to form an interlocking joint. |
Dowel
A short cylinder of wood that is usually glued and inserted in corresponding holes and used to fasten pieces of wood. |
Dust Board
Modification in which the center stile is eliminated allowing full access to the cabinet interior, while a strip is attached to the left door leaving 1/2" exposed when the doors are in a closed position. |
Edge Nicks
Type of distressing that involves pressing dents, nicks, and other impressions into the edge or profile of the piece. |
Edge Profile
Decorative edge routed onto exterior edge of doors, drawer fronts, or appearance boards. |
Egg and Dart
A decorative molding used in architecture and cabinet work, consisting of an egg-shaped form alternating with a form shaped like an arrow, anchor, or tongue. |
English Valance
Straight valance with decorative cut out area in a unique pattern. |

Finish Agreement
Agreement that must by signed by both the dealer and client outlining the characteristics of the finish or distressing package that has been ordered. |
Finish Interior
Mandates that the interior will match the exterior of the cabinet in wood specie and finish. |
Finish Rub Through
Type of finish distressing in which the high use areas of doors and drawer fronts will have of the finish rubbed through to the bare wood. |
Finish Up
An order for an item that was incorrectly ordered by size or quantity. |
Finished End
Term used to describe the cabinetry end when produced with wood specie veneer and finished. |
Flush End
Term used to eliminate the 1/4" scribe on the exterior end of the cabinet allowing the end to meet the face frame with a flush corner. |
Flush Toe Space
Modification in which the recess toe is eliminated allowing the face frame to extend to the floor creating a 5-1/2" tall flush finished toe. |
Flute
An ornamental groove. |
Frameless
Term used when the face frame is eliminated and the cabinet is produced with a 5/8" thick end only. |
Framing Bead
Term used to describe the profile on the inside edge of the door frame. |
Full-Overlay
Option in the Overlay Series, in which the door overlaps the face frame so that the face frame is exposed as little as possible. |
Glacier
A finishing technique also referred to as brushstroking. |
Gloss
The brightness or luster of the surface; sheen. |
Guardsman
Recommended line of furniture care products. |
Heartwood
The central core of wood in a tree that no longer conducts sap or has living tissues. In some species, the build-up of extractives in the heartwood darkens the wood color in this area. |
Heirloom
A heavy distressing option that includes both physical and finish distressing. |
Hinge
A joint or device on which a door swings. |
Inset
Series of cabinetry in which the doors and drawer fronts are set inside the face frame. |
Intermediate Rail
Rail used in a location other than the top or bottom of the frame. |
Intermediate Stile
Stile used in a location other than the far left or right of the frame. |
Inverted Clip
A clip corner in which the 45 degree goes inward toward the inside face frame. |
Joint
A point at which two parts are joined. |
Joint Cracks
Type of distressing in which the slits are located at a joint of a cross rail and side stile. |
Keepsake
Premium finish selection. |
Knee Drawer
A drawer unit used in a desk application to create the knee space. |
Knife Hinge
Adjustable, semi-concealed, self-closing hinge. |
Knot
The wood fiber associated with a tree limb or branch. |
Lattice
An openwork structure of crossed strips or slats of wood. |
Layout
Top view drawing showing the placement of the cabinetry in an area. |
Loose Toe
Shipping the bottom 4" of base or tall units separately to ease installation. |

Manor Series
A door style in which the door is 2 designs tall with the smaller 8" panel at the bottom. |
Mineral Streak
Darkened or discolored wood areas caused by minerals which the tree extracts from the soil. Mineral streaks appear as blackish-blue, well-defined streaks running parallel with the grain (commonly found in maple, cherry and oak). |
Miter
To angle-cut the ends or edges of a piece. |
Mullion
A slender, vertical dividing strip of wood between the lights of a glass door. |
Notch
A concave or V-shaped groove or indentation in an edge or on a surface. |
Offset Hinge
3/8" offset hinge with self-closing feature. |
Onlay
Ornamental piece to attached to the face of a product for decorative purposes. |
Overlay
Cabinet series in which the doors and drawer fronts overlap the face frame. |
Paint Grade
A lumber grade used primarily for painting. |
Paint Interior
Mandates the interior will be painted to match the exterior on solid color cabinetry. |
Pegs
Decorative feature used on doors to create the appearance of the old peg style joints. Available in walnut and matching wood specie. |
Peninsula
Term applied when the back of a cabinet is visible and is produced with either operable or false doors. |
Perspective
A drawing or painting technique in which objects represented seem to have distance and depth. |
Pigeon Hole Section
Frameless unit designed with cubby holes to use in office situations. |
Pipe Chase
Cut-Out in the back of the cabinet to allow for pipes or duct work. |
Plinth
The square block at the base of a column, pedestal, etc. |
Pocket Doors
Modification in which the doors open and are pushed back into the cabinet behind partitions leaving the interior fully exposed. |
Preview Door
A door produced and cut in half. Mouser retains half while the other half is sent to the Client for approval. |
Quarter Series
A door style in which the door is 2 designs tall with the smaller 8" panel at the top. |
Rail
A strip of wood placed horizontally between upright pieces to serve as a barrier or support. |
Rail Shelf
Fixed shelf installed behind the rail to create a floor between openings. |
Reveal
The amount of space left exposed on the face frame after the door overlap. |
Rock Distressing
Type of distressing that involves randomly striking all parts and pieces with a rock, creating indentations on the product surface. |
Routed Fingerpull
Optional 5" long routed fingerpull located in either the center top or bottom of doors and drawer fronts. |
Rustic
A mid-level syle of physical distressing. |

Sanded Corner Wear
Distressing technique in which the edges of doors, drawer fronts, appearance boards, etc are sanded prior to finishing to create a worn appearance. |
Sap Stain
Bluish-black, gray or brown wood discoloration caused by fungi. |
Sapwood
The wood in the tree that conducts water up the tree stem and may contain some living cells. Sapwood may be lighter in color than heartwood due to the lack of extractives. |
Sheen
Brightness, shininess, luster |
Spattering
Often called flyspecking; yields a subtle specking to the selected finish. |
Spice Rack
Unit attached to the back of the door to use for spice and canned good storage. |
Splits
Type of distressing created by carving random length separations in the wood that follows the wood grain. |
Stile
A vertical piece in a frame or panel. |
Style
Something stylish or fashionable |
Surface Nicks
Type of distressing that involves pressing dents, and other impressions into the flat surfaces of doors, drawer fronts, appearance boards, etc. |
Tambour
A door consisting of narrow, wooden slats glued to a flexible canvas, that slides in grooves. |
Toe Kick
The recessed area at the bottom front of base and tall units. |
Undermount
The standard slide used is a Full-Extension Undermount Concealed slide. (100 lb. static / 75 lb. dynamic rating.) |
Valance
Decorative wood board often scalloped and used at the top of bookcases, above sinks, etc. |
Vent
Drawer Front attached to the face frame that is not intended to open and typically has no hardware. Primarily used to conceal a sink or cook top area. |
Vintage
Cabinet series featuring MDF core material and a natural maple wood-grained vinyl interior. |
Wainscot Panel
Decorative panel that matches the door style and may be produced as an integral side of the cabinet. |
Warp
A distortion, such as a twist or bend in the wood. |
Wide Rail Top
Modification in which the top rail of the cabinet is produced in a wider width to allow for the attachment of mouldings, onlays, etc. |
Wide Stile
Modification in which the left or right stile of the cabinet is increased in order to provide clearance or attach onlays. The overall width of the cabinet is not changed. |
Windsor Valance
Straight valance with decorative cut out area in a unique pattern. |
WoodBridge
Optional all wood cabinet construction with a natural maple veneer interior and stained cabinet exterior, or a painted maple veneer interior with painted cabinet exterior. |
Worm Hole
Voids in the wood caused by the burrowing action of certain wood-infesting worms. |
